PS5 M.2 SSD Upgrade Guide: Requirements, Heatsinks, Installation, and Game Transfer

What the PS5 requires

A PlayStation 5 does not accept every drive sold as an M.2 SSD. Sony specifies an M.2 NVMe SSD using PCIe Gen4 x4, with supported capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster and requires an effective heat-dissipation structure, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer plate.

The supported form factors are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110. The entire drive and cooling structure must fit within the PS5 expansion bay dimensions. M.2 SATA drives are not supported, even if the connector looks similar.

What to buy

  • PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD.
  • 250 GB to 8 TB capacity.
  • 5,500 MB/s or faster sequential read speed recommended.
  • A built-in heatsink or a separate heatsink that fits the PS5 bay.
  • The correct screwdriver and a clean, well-lit work surface.

Capacity is a practical choice rather than a performance ranking. A 1 TB drive is the lowest size that feels meaningfully useful for many players, while 2 TB often provides a better balance for large modern libraries. Check the current price per gigabyte instead of assuming the largest drive is the best value.

Before opening the console

  1. Update the PS5 system software.
  2. Turn the console completely off. Do not use Rest Mode.
  3. Disconnect the power cable and every accessory.
  4. Wait for the console to cool.
  5. Touch a grounded metal object before handling the drive.
  6. Read both Sony’s instructions and the SSD manufacturer’s heatsink directions.

Keep liquids, loose screws, and static-prone fabric away from the work area. Do not force the PS5 cover or the drive. If a part is not moving as the official diagram shows, stop and check orientation.

Install the M.2 SSD

  1. Place the PS5 on a stable surface in the orientation shown by Sony for your model.
  2. Remove the outer cover carefully.
  3. Remove the expansion-slot cover screw and lift the metal cover.
  4. Move the spacer to the hole matching the SSD length, commonly 80 for a 2280 drive.
  5. Hold the M.2 SSD by the edges and insert it diagonally into the connector until fully seated.
  6. Lower the free end onto the spacer and secure it with the screw.
  7. Confirm that the heatsink does not exceed the bay clearance and that the drive lies flat.
  8. Replace the expansion-slot cover and outer console cover.

The connector should accept the drive with controlled pressure. A partially inserted SSD may angle incorrectly or fail detection. Do not tighten the mounting screw so hard that the board bends.

Format and verify the drive

Reconnect the console and power it on. The PS5 should detect the new storage and prompt you to format it. Formatting erases anything already on the drive, so never install an SSD containing data you still need.

After formatting, the console reports a read-speed result. Treat it as a useful check, not a perfect benchmark. Confirm that the M.2 storage appears in Settings and that the available capacity is reasonable after formatting overhead.

Move or install games

In storage settings, choose whether new PS5 and PS4 games should install to console storage or the M.2 SSD. Existing games can be moved in batches. A moved PS5 game can launch directly from the supported M.2 drive; it does not need to be copied back first.

Move one game and launch it before transferring the entire library. This confirms that the drive, formatting, and installation are working normally. Keep save-data backups and cloud synchronization separate from game-install storage.

Common installation mistakes

  • Buying an M.2 SATA drive instead of PCIe Gen4 NVMe.
  • Using a heatsink that is too tall or wide for the bay.
  • Leaving the spacer in the wrong position.
  • Failing to insert the SSD fully into the connector.
  • Handling contacts or components directly.
  • Starting the job while the console is hot or still connected to power.
  • Assuming every advertised “PS5 compatible” drive includes a suitable heatsink.

If the PS5 does not detect the SSD

Power down completely, disconnect the console, and recheck the seating, spacer position, and supported specifications. Confirm the console software is current. If the drive still does not appear, test the SSD only with equipment and procedures appropriate for NVMe hardware, or contact the drive manufacturer. Do not repeatedly force the connector.

The safest upgrade is not the drive with the loudest benchmark claim; it is the one that meets Sony’s dimensions, cooling, interface, and capacity requirements without improvisation.
